Shift Worker Fatigue – Is It Real Or Are You Just Talking Yourself Into It?

If you’re a shift worker then the term ‘shift worker fatigue’ is a sensitive topic because it pretty much sums up your entire existence – fatigued. 

But is this really true or are we anticipating shift worker fatigue by just talking about it? 

Confused?  Well let me explain. 

I was having a bite to eat in the lunch room one day, and I couldn’t help but overhear the conversation that was going on between two people. 

Their conversation focussed on how tired they were going to be tomorrow and for the rest of the week.  It was as if they were trying to convince each other how few hours of sleep they were going to get, and most of all, how tired they were going to be.  But the interesting thing was, that they were sounding more and more tired the longer the conversation continued. 

Each person said things like, “Boy, am I going to be tired tomorrow,” and “Gee, I’m only going to get three hours of sleep tonight.”  Basically they were anticipating feeling exhausted so pretty much talking themselves into it. 

What was really interesting is that the longer the conversation went on, their voices became heavier and I actually felt myself getting tired just listening to their conversation! 

The problem with anticipating tiredness, or shift worker fatigue in this way, is that it clearly reinforces the tiredness.  It rivets your attention to the number of hours you are sleeping and how tired you are going to be. 

Could anticipating tiredness send a message to your brain reminding you to feel and act tired because you have programmed yourself to respond this way? 

Personally, I have found that the best strategy to overcome shift worker fatigue is to get as much sleep as I possibly can and be grateful for whatever amount that might be.  If I simply forget about it and don’t talk about it – I’m far more rested with the sleep that I do get. 

So stop talking about how tired you’re feeling – or how tired that you’re going to be, and you’ll start feeling much more energized and certainly a lot less fatigued!

Ovarian Cysts – What Is That?

The generic term cyst refers to a fluid-filled growth or structure within the body. Ovarian cysts are cysts that are on or within the ovaries. They will, by their definition as cysts, contain at least some fluid.

A cyst is a sac, filled with fluid that could show up in almost any part of the body. On or in the ovaries, different types of cysts may form. The most frequent, most common kind of ovarian cyst will be the type called “functional cyst”. Functional cysts often form during the normal monthly menstrual cycle.

Each month, the natural cycle is that a woman’s ovaries will grow small cysts, each containing one of their eggs. When an egg matures, the sac holding it ruptures, releasing the egg. This happens so that the egg can then go down the fallopian tube to the uterus for fertilization.

After opening to release the egg, the sac then dissolves. In the case with one kind of functional cyst, named a “follicular cyst”, the cyst sac does NOT rupture and release the egg. Then it may just keep on growing. Follicular cysts normally disappear on their own within one to three months.

Another kind of functional cyst, called a “corpus luteum cyst”, can form if the cyst sac does not dissolve. With a corpus luteum cyst, the sac seals up again after the egg has been released. Once sealed, fluid builds up inside the cyst sac, causing it to grow. Within a few weeks, this type of cyst also usually goes away by itself. But sometimes it grows large. As large as almost 4 inches in diameter. It may twist the ovary, or bleed, causing pain. Serophene or Clomid, drugs which are used to induce ovulation, may increase the risk of getting this kind of cyst.

These types of cysts are very rarely associated with cancer.

An ovarian cyst then, is, simply speaking, a collection of fluid in a sac within the normally more or less solid ovary. There are many different types of ovarian cysts. Ovarian cysts occur in most women and are a frequent gynecologic problem.

Fear of ovarian cancer makes ovarian cysts a common cause of concern among women. However, it is important to note that an overwhelming majority of ovarian cysts are not cancerous at all.

Still, some benign cysts do not go away by themselves. Some of these that do not go away will grow and cause problems. Many of these will require treatment. In very rare cases, the possibility exists that some may be or may become cancerous.

An ovarian cyst may be found during a routine examination, when you are feeling just fine. Or it may be discovered after it causes pain or problems and you go for a checkup to find out why.

In any case, there’s good news – practically all ovarian cysts will just go away by themselves without any treatment. Those that cause problems can be treated. When you consider that the vast majority of ovarian cysts are benign, finding that you have cysts on your ovaries is not a great cause for worry.

Can a Stress Test Save Your Life?

What is a stress test?
A stress test is an exercise test that is performed on a treadmill or a stationary bike while a health professional monitors your heart function and blood pressure.  There are electrodes that are attached to your body and hooked to an EKG (electrocardiogram) machine provided by a used medical equipment company to assess if there are any blockages in your arteries or any irregular heart beat’s during exercise.  A blood pressure sleeve is placed on your arm throughout the test to measure blood pressure.  A health professional will start you at a low pace and gradually bring you up to your target heart rate.

You are at a higher risk of heart disease if…
o    You smoke
o    You have high blood pressure or hypertension
o    You are obese
o    You have high cholesterol
o    You don’t exercise and lead a sedentary lifestyle

Juice To many people, it’s a health food. To others, it’s simply soda in disguise.

That virtuous glass of juice is feeling the squeeze as doctors, scientists and public health authorities step up their efforts to reduce the nation’s girth.

It’s an awkward issue for the schools that peddle juice in their cafeterias and vending machines. It’s uncomfortable for advocates of a junk food tax, who say they can’t afford to target juice and alienate its legions of fans. It’s confusing for consumers who think they’re doing something good when they chug their morning OJ, sip a 22-ounce smoothie or pack a box of apple juice in their child’s lunch.

The inconvenient truth is that 100 percent fruit juice poses the same obesity-related health risks as Coke, Pepsi and other widely vilified beverages.

With so much focus on the outsized role that sugary drinks play in the country’s collective weight gain — and the accompanying rise in conditions including diabetes, heart disease and cancer — it’s time juice lost its wholesome image, some experts say.

“It’s pretty much the same as sugar water,” said Dr. Charles Billington, an appetite researcher at the University of Minnesota. In the modern diet, he said, “There’s no need for any juice at all.”

A glass of juice concentrates all the sugar from multiple pieces of fruit. Ounce per ounce, it contains more calories than soda, although it tends to be consumed in smaller servings. A cup of orange juice has 112 calories, apple juice has 114 and grape juice packs 152, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The same amount of Coke has 97 calories, and Pepsi has 100.

And just like soft drinks, juice is rich in fructose — the simple sugar that does the most to make food sweet.

University of California, Davis scientist Kimber Stanhope has found that consuming high levels of fructose increases risk factors for heart disease and Type 2 diabetes because it is converted into fat by the liver more readily than glucose. Her studies suggest that it doesn’t matter whether the fructose comes from soda or juice.

“Both are going to promote equal weight gain,” she said, adding that she’s perplexed by the fixation on the evils of sugar-sweetened beverages: “Why are they the only culprit?”

Juice is a relatively recent addition to the human diet. For thousands of years, people ate fruit and drank mostly water.

But in the early 1900s, citrus growers in Florida were harvesting more oranges than they could sell. Then they had an epiphany: Promote juice.

“You consume more oranges if you drink them than if you eat them whole,” said Alissa Hamilton, author of the book “Squeezed: What You Don’t Know About Orange Juice.”

The U.S. Army was instrumental in turning orange juice into a commercial product.

It originally served a powdered lemonade to ensure soldiers got enough vitamin C, but it tasted “like battery acid,” Hamilton said. So, during World War II, the Army commissioned scientists to invent a system for freezing OJ in a concentrated form. The patent wound up with Minute Maid, which sold cans of frozen juice concentrate in grocery stores.

Body builder Jack LaLanne and other health gurus touted juice as a natural medicine, and decades of advertising helped secure its place at the breakfast table. Today, about half of all Americans consume juice regularly, according to NPD Group, a market research outfit.

The Juice Products Association emphasizes the value of the vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients in juice — especially when so many American eat so little fresh produce.

“If someone can add a glass of fruit juice at breakfast, that’s an important addition to the diet,” said Sarah Wally, a dietitian for the trade group.

But scientists increasingly are questioning whether the benefits outweigh the sugar and calories that come with them. “The upside of juice consumption is so infinitesimal compared to the downside that we shouldn’t even be having this discussion,” said Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist at the University of California, San Francisco.

Several researchers have linked juice to more healthful diets and lower weights. But many experts say the data simply reflect a correlation between juice and healthful diets.

“Kids who drink more juice are more likely to be eating breakfast, and kids who eat breakfast tend to weigh less than kids who don’t,” said Kelly Brownell, director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University.

“Having apple juice and eating an apple are not the same,” said Billington, the University of Minnesota appetite researcher.
